A Past Time to Look Up To

If you have been at the homestead on one of our event days, you’ve likely seen the assortment of pioneer games we have had out to try. One of our personal favourites is the stilts! The stilts were a fun past time for pioneer children and adults alike, stilts are even still popular today (though they look a little different with their metal structure!)

Our lovely carpenter, Gord, worked alongside Peter this past weekend to make us a few more pairs. One set is special in that it is slightly taller than the rest. The trick is to master shorter heights and then work your way up! We’ve had some visitors tell us they had stilts that were similar when they were children, they said they were so tall they had to get up on the split rail fence just to get onto them! You could even make your own right at home using 2’x4’s!

We are trying to have the stilts out on a more regular basis, so come visit us during the week and ask to try them out, although we warn you that it takes lots of practice!

Our “tall” set of stilts! The shorter ones have a foot piece that touch the ground.
