Seeds No More: A Unique Invention

WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY/ AUGUST 12TH, 2020

Welcome back everyone! Today we are going to look at a unique artifact that served an important purpose that we might not even think of today. Todays artifact is the Raisin Seeder!

Today we get seedless raisins at the store and don’t have to think about anything other than eating them. But it used to be that when you got raisins you would have to take the seeds out before eating them and especially when baking with raisins.

To use the seeder you would insert the raisins into the top and turn the crank, the raisin would go through the device and the seeds would be removed. The seeder would be secured to the table and was made out of cast steel, serated circular knives and a cork wheel.

This specific raisin seeder was donated by Mrs. F.J.T. Maines and belonged to the O’Hara family.

This unique tool shows us how the conveniences of today are far different from the hard work that had to be put in in the past.
